Hemp Seed Oil vs. Hemp Extract (CBD)

hemp-oil-vs-hemp-extract. One contains CBD and one does not.

Did you know that most online stores like eBay and Amazon still do not allow the sales of CBD? If you search them, thousands of results do show up. If you read them however, they usually say “Hemp Seed Oil”. Some people who are new to Hemp Extract also known as CBD do not understand there is a difference, they see “Hemp” and believe it is all the same.

So what exactly is hemp seed?

Hemp seed oil is relative to many other carrier oils—along the lines of sunflower seed oil and jojoba oil—in that it is a cold-pressed extract from seeds. It is sometimes referred to as cannabis sativa seed oil. This oil is perfectly good seed oil that is high in antioxidants, omega-3 and -6 fatty acids, but contains no CBD. Hemp seed or cannabis sativa seed oil has been available in health food stores for decades. This oil is abundantly present in smoothies and skin care. So, this means it has absolutely no cannabinoids in it—not CBD, THC, or CBN. It is generally a superfood and is great for adding nutritional value to your diet. In terms of skin care, it is known as a powerful moisturizer and skin softener. It does not clog pores or contribute to oily skin. It shows up on the product label as hemp seed oil, cannabis sativa (hemp) seed oil, virgin hemp oil, and hemp oil.

Is it OK to use?

Since both are essentially wellness ingredients, you will not exactly be harmed if you accidentally purchase or use one instead of the other; however, if you are trying to reap the maximum benefits of CBD oil, hemp seed oil won’t deliver. The biggest issue is that hemp seed oil and CBD are two totally different compounds that come from different parts of the hemp plant, have different makeups, and different benefits.

Marketing them as the same thing just is not accurate. It does a disservice to consumers who are expecting certain benefits that they will not get from hemp seed oil. Often, people are paying more for what they think is CBD!

To make sure you’re not falling into any marketing traps, it is key to check the product label!
