The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that more than 34 million Americans smoke cigarettes and more than 16 million live with a smoking-related disease. Many people who smoke are eager to quit, but haven’t had success with traditional methods like gums or patches. We decided to see if CBD could help reduce the urge to smoke cigarettes.
Benefits Of CBD
Many of the benefits of CBD can directly help some of the symptoms associated with nicotine withdrawal. CBD promotes restful sleep and enhances relaxation, two areas which are often disturbed during attempts to quit smoking.
Several recent studies have been published that suggest CBD could be beneficial for those who are looking to control the urge to smoke or quit completely. However, all of these studies noted that their findings are preliminary and that further research is needed.
A research project, published in the May 2018 edition of the journal Addiction, found that CBD reduced attentional bias to photos of tobacco. However, they didn’t find it reduced their cravings or withdrawal symptoms.
Preliminary data released from a study by the Beckley Foundation noted that participants treated with CBD reduced their total number of smoked cigarettes by 40%. Their findings “suggest CBD to be a potential treatment for nicotine addiction that warrants further exploration.” A 2013 study, published in the journal Addiction Behaviors, reported identical numbers with overall reduction of smoked cigarettes.
